Banner Contest - Closed for Submissions

The Banner Contest is now officially closed for any further entries! Please don't submit any more pictures to this Contest, as they won't be taken into account.

Thank you all for the great posts. We can be sure, whoever wins this contest is making a great contribution to the whole Friendica Project!

But still, the Contest isn't over. For another four days you can still view, comment and especially "like" the current submissions. As explained before: The amount of likes for a post determines which competitor wins the Friendica Server!

Have fun finding the new "Friendica Banner Contest Winner 2012" :D

Please reshare this post once more. Thank you!

@Friendica Day @Let's Talk @New Here @Public Stream @page promoter @deutschsprachige Nutzer @Uberspace-User
I spend extra 5 € for the uberspace account! For the double pleasure for the winner with his Friendica node. :-)
Thank you very much! That's great!
Now the Friendica Server will be worth 10 months of Friendica-Happiness (plus one month "testing" for free, as it will be created just after the contest!)

Banner Contest - Only one day left!!

Only one day is left to enter the Banner Contest! Hurry up, and be a part of the game! It doesn't matter if you think you aren't talented - it's what others think about it that counts.
Give it a try!

And if you really just want to see, what other people submitted and take part in the decisionmaking: Just join this group and give those entries a "like" that should win the Friendica Server. Remember, the amount of likes determines the winner!

After submissions are closed on May 10, 23:59 UTC, you still can comment and "like" all contributions until May 14, 23:59 UTC so the winner can be presented on Friendica Day (May 15)!

Have fun taking part in the contest!

And as always: Please reshare and spread the word!

Banner Contest - Only 3 days left!

Only three days are left to submit pictures to the Banner Contest!

Take the chance and win a fully-featured, ready-to-go Friendica Server!

There are no submissions to the contest yet - be the first to show your little Friendica advertisement today. It would be a shame, if this contest had to close without any entries - and no winner as a matter of fact.

Go for it, join the group, post anything, no matter if you think you are talented or not. Let other users decide.

You know it already: Please reshare and let people know - it's now more important than ever!

Thank you.

This is the banner I'm using now.

This is why we need the banner contest.

Come on people, you can't do worse than me.
If you want to submit this as an entry, you have to make it a wall-to-wall post ;-)
(At least there will be SOME competition then :D)

#friendshostfriends

#friendshostfriends is the place to go if you have a private Friendica site with some space for your buddies - or if you are looking for space on a private site. Hosting your own site or trusting a friend to be your admin is the recommended way of using Friendica, offering your best privacy and freedom guarantee. In addition to that, private sites are often more powerful than public servers, which may disable some features for resource-saving reasons (see here: http://friendica.com/node/33 ). So don't be afraid to ask your friends for accommodation!

You might also want to advertise here if you're looking for people who want to set up a new site with you - perhaps sharing the financial burden.
Finally, a group for something we all have in common.
I beg to differ : I died twice already.

first post

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm also on Twitter and Diaspora. Friendica seems to be very powerful, but it's rather overwhelming for a beginner.
I'll probably need a few days to understand how things work here, but I think I'm gonna like it ! :)

Hello there, and be welcome.

@Friendica Day

@Thomas Willingham has just created @Friendica Meetups a new group. The whole idea is if you want to meet with your ~friendica ~friendica contacts around your place you can use this group to schedule such meets. My idea was to use meetup.com but @Thomas Willingham told "when ~friendica ~friendica can act even as forum why use another service?"

Any one planning to arrange a @Friendica Meetups during @Friendica Day ?

P.S: I don't know which other forum I can tag this so maximum people can utilize it. So please consider re sharing to appropriate groups

+1 to oz FriendiConf !!! :-)
So, if we shoot for winter time here/summer time there, we have plenty of time to planet [sic].
Despite having groups ranging from @Cardigans and @Busty Foster Mums to @Wallowing In Self Pity and @Zombies we've just been accused of not having diverse enough groups!

So here is your @Friendica Day challenge.

Start a group.

That's it.

If you can't do anything else, start a group about something that interests you, or the place you live. Whenever you make a relevant post, remember to tag your groups.

Let's have lots of them, covering as many subjects as we can think of.

To create a group, all you have to do is sign up for a second account at your own server, and in the settings menu select "community/celebrity account" for the account type. For bonus points, connect to @page promoter and @Let's Talk to promote your group.

Banner Contest - Open for Submissions!

The Banner Contest is now open for submissions!

You can now post your best banners, avatars, pictures etc. to this group to enter the contest. To win, you need to have the most "likes" for your entry, so tell people about it!

The Contest will be closed for submissions on May 10, 23:59 UTC, after that you will be able to "like" the best entries for another three days until Friendica Day!

Again, please reshare and spread the word!

Banner Contest - Get Ready!

It's less than a day left until the Banner Contest opens for submissions!

Get your digital brushes ready, and join the group!

Only if you are a member of the Banner contest group you can post your contribution!
At the moment only 8 people have joined the group, so your chance to win this is enormous! Join now!

And as always, spread the word, reshare the post, link to the group. This will only be fun with a lot of people! :D

Banner Contest - Rules and Information

Only a few days are left until you can submit your most creative, funny, advertising Banners, Logos or Pictures about our beloved Friendica!

But what is this all about and how can I participate?

The idea behind the contest is to find the best Friendica-related artwork out there and have it honoured on @Friendica Day It will then be published prominently so everyone can use it to include it on homepages, blogs and other social networks.

From May 04, 00:00 UTC you can submit as many entries as you like for exactly one week (i.e. until May 10, 23:59 UTC). Simply post the picture via Wall-To-Wall to this group (embedded or as an attachment, best as .png or .jpeg).
After that, people can comment your entries and more important, "like" it.
Only the overall count of "likes" will be deciding who wins the contest!

Bei mir nun auch (Now it works)! :-)
Hmm, eigentlich wurde nichts geändert, ich habe die Registrierung geöffnet bevor ich die letzten Posts geschrieben hab!
@Let's Talk @New Here

Are you new here and want to test the features of Friendica? Are you a dev that needs to test against a remote server?

@test is an automatic friend account you can use for testing purposes.

@Test Group is a community group account you can use in the same way.

This lets us keep the other groups free from test posts, and make sure they all have on-topic content.
Great idea, Thomas. Thanks! :-)
You can see what they were last used to test...

I'll also turn off those "Test Group welcomes..." messages in a second.

new group for gardeners, of any ilk, whether growing flowers, herbs, veggies, christmas trees, mushrooms, fungi, whatever...

@Gardener - https://free-haven.org/u/garden
Sorry, but I guess there was a server blip when I tried connecting to the group. It showed up in my contacts list, but I can't post on the group's wall & I didn't show up as a contact on the group page. So I deleted the contact & tried again, but it says I can't do that. :-( So maybe I made things worse by doing that...

When you have a chance, can you see if there's a hanging introduction request from me & get rid of it so I can try again?
If you just joined Friendica, welcome!  In addition to adding people as friends, you can also join community forums (groups).  For example, you might consider the New Here (https://kakste.com/profile/newhere), or the Public Stream (https://kakste.com/profile/public_stream). Other good places to start are @Let's Talk and @Local Friendica

A global directory of forums is available at http://dir.friendica.com/directory/forum

Have fun!

The Friendica Brony Page

After the Doctor Who page, @Let's Talk gets its second fan page for a TV show.

Those who don't know what this is all about: Don't let yourself be fooled by the sugary cuteness in this picture. The fanbase surely does no more. Forget all you (think you) know about My Little Pony, this show goes way beyond what one might expect from a little girls' TV show.

Those who do know: /) Brohoof! (\

Note: This page might relocate in summer. Any change of address will of course be announced.
Speaking of Doctor Who, they even have an (unofficially named, but present in the show) Doctor Whooves. Uncanny resemblance to David Tennant there.

Also (even with the same cutie mark) The Master, the 5th Doctor or the 11th Doctor, whichever you prefer.

Newcomers - go local

Newcomers may not have noticed the Local Friendica (meta) forum yet - http://newzot.hydra.uberspace.de/profile/newzot

It's a great place for people to announce Friendica forums with a local or regional focus - though very much under-used to to date.

Friendica Day - May 15

Friendica Day is May 15, 2012.

It's a milestone day.

Join this forum if you want to do something for Friendica - something to end the post privacy era. Tell us what you mean to get done by May 15 and talk about your progress here.
Examples of something to do:
- install your own personal server and help share the load
- help someone install a server
- set up a public server
- get an article published in any kind of publication (including school magazines)
- stage a local event
- convince a provider to put our shared hosting prerequisites in place
...
But it's up to you and your imagination to find a useful task for yourself!

(Ich will hier keine Werbung machen).

Wäre grundsätzlich ok, wenn die dann anzeigen würden "delivered SSL certificate is ok, but reverse DNS lookup gives another hostname, and its certificate doens't fit the hostname first tried" oder so. Aber so, wie es angezeigt wird, ist es eher irreführend als erhellend, IMHO.

Forums found floating around...

There are still plenty of groups and forums in the Global Directory that could be advertised in @Let's Talk or @Local Friendica to make sure that potentially interested people know about them. Feel free to reshare this post.
I know I won't be able to host my own friendica site until this fall, but in the meantime it would be nice to get in touch with people hosting on DreamHost and who are willing to share their experiences.

Sorry to hear that C-Base is a really nice location, especially for the geeky/nerdy people.

Regarding your resumé, totally agree but I think that's an effect of the pure mass of people. Also Berlin needs more then just one visit and also longer visits. Some time ago we had relatives here for a week and it was really stressful just to show them a glimpse of the city...
Yeah, need to go there next time ;-)
I planned visiting it on tuesday evening, but then I was at Kinski (pirate party regulars' table) and stayed there (/went partying with some of them)..

Public Stream - Talk about anything!

Let's Talk is a great group for finding public groups, and people who share your interests.

But wouldn't you like a group where you could talk about any old thing to complete strangers without having to add any new contacts at all?

The Public Stream is the group for exactly that.

I avoid any subject pretty much anywhere that I wouldn't want the kids to read, so I appreciate that rule.
I've added a link to the posting guidelines in the groups profile page.

We know what it's like to be without New Scientist for so long that you didn't even know it was shit now.
We know what it's like when you try to switch off, but the telly is in foreign.
We know what it's like when there's no Warburton's bread.

@Let's Talk There's a sudden increase in interest and installation of #Friendica lately, it's amazing but at the same time I wonder on the following:

  • Why Friendica?
  • Which platform did you can from before switching to Friendica? (#Google+ #Facebook #Friendster #Multiply #Myspace #Diaspora #Movim etc.)
  • Where are you from? (real world place, nation, or region)
  • How did you find about Friendica?
  • If you are self-hosting, why did you self-hosted?

    • Why solo hosting? (if applicable)
    • Why host for your friends and family? (if applicable)
    • Why host a public instance? (if applicable)

  • If you are not self-hosting:

    • Which instance are you with?
    • Why have you not chosen to self-host? (VPS is cheap nowadays, and some of us probably are willing [for a fee of course] to set you up from the ground up)

  • Anything else you want to share not covered by the questions above? Or perhaps suggestions or feedback or a statement (that some of us writers can use as a testament to the success of Friendica)?

Why Friendica?

1-Because I can make it my own.
2-Because I can contribute to the project.
3-A published API
4-Real, powerful federation and xposting opps.
On this last, I had written Xpostulate a couple of years before, and had blogs on WP, Blogger, LJ, IJ, DW, Posterous, and Tumblr, with different readers on each platform, and posted to all of them, plus more readers picking up my dents/tweets on identi.ca, twitter and FB, reaching, thus, a wide audience. Friendica actually simplifies that. One post to friendica can reach all of the above (although, at this point, I post to blogger via posterous).

@Let's Talk Introducing 2 new groups:

One thing which occurs to me is that #Friendica forums could be quite vulnerable to spam.  How difficult would it be for spammers to create a bunch of accounts and then bombard forums with irrelevant posts?  I've seen similar things happen in Google Groups, and elsewhere.

Probably currently there aren't enough users to be an attractive target, but that might change if Friendica becomes more popular.

@Let's Talk

There are plans to implement a spam filter soon, I believe.
Probably the main thing which could be done to hinder spammers would be to have some sort of captcha, either on new account creation or for joining a group. I know captchas aren't ideal, and are often annoying, but it might come to that if Friendica gets popular.
